TEMPO.CO, Cuba - A 65-year-old Diana Nyad has recorded herself on the record book after completing a long-distance swimming from Cuba to Florida, United States. Despite the famous sharks' existence in the waters that she took on her route, she managed to swim the 165-kilometer distance without a shark cage.
Daily Mail reported last month Nyad began her journey September 1 and arrived in Florida the next day. With her stunning stamina, the U.S elderly swimmer completed her mission in 52 hours 54 minute and 18.6 seconds.
Nyad has been dreaming of swimming across the Florida Strait since she was younger. This successful mission was her fifth attempt. Her first mission was done in 1978 and another three attempts during 2011 and 2012. Millions of supporters tweeted their supports to Nyad through social media. Even the US President Barrack Obama tweeted in his Twitter account: "Congratulations to @DianaNyad. Never give up on your dreams."
With sharks, storms, stream and jelly fish becoming the obstacles, swimming across the Florida Strait is not easy. A team used electric field to protect Nyad from the jelly fish. She also had to wear a special head cover, swim suit and socks.
Supporters cheered her as she reached the Florida Beach. She was put on the stretcher and given medical treatment. Looking so tired, Nyad didn’t encounter a serious injury. Through her Twitter account, Nyad Tweeted: "I got 3 messages: 1 is we should #NeverEverGiveUp, 2 is #NeverTooOld to chase dreams and 3 is #NeverASolitarySport it's a team." Hopefully Nyad's heroic action will inspire and motivate her fans to 'Never Ever Give Up'.
